Local Priorities Vehicle crime update - Arrest Following Vehicle Interference in Ashford Town Centre

I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Vehicle crime (theft from or theft of), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey.

Overnight, colleagues of mine from Ashford's Neighbourhood Policing Team, who were off duty at the time, disturbed a man interfering with a motor vehicle in the town centre.

The suspect attempted to make off on a push bike but was swiftly detained by the officers. Following a search, he was found in possession of tools believed to be intended for use in theft-related offences.

The man was already wanted by police in connection with two separate shoplifting investigations so we were already on the lookout for him.

He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of:
Two counts of theft shoplifting
Going equipped to steal
Vehicle interference

The suspect remains in police custody and is being interviewed by investigators today. A decision regarding charges and a possible court appearance will be made following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service.

This incident serves as a reminder that police officers are committed to protecting their communities both on and off duty. I would like to commend my colleagues for their vigilance and professionalism in bringing this incident to a swift conclusion.

Their actions may have prevented a local resident from becoming the victim of crime and demonstrate the dedication of our officers to keeping Ashford a safe place to live, work and visit. We will continue to target those who seek to commit crime in our town and bring offenders before the courts wherever possible.
